There’s more to life than Sled Dogs you know. There’s rescue dogs toughing it out in shelters and dogs being fostered by the real unsung heroes. There are agility dogs and therapy dogs. And for goodness sake lets not forget about Guide dogs! (struck down by lightning for that) And our beloved pets of course…the family members. The list goes on.
That these other dog-worldly creatures existed was bought back to my attention when I went to visit a Chiropractor in Redmond. (I think I mentioned my back was hurt ?) I was greeted lovingly at the door by the bundle of beauty that was Skittles. With a sleek dark chocolate coat that almost forgot it was supposed to be Brindle and an expression like S’mores (ridiculously over sweet snack that my fellow Americans insist no campfire is complete without – I beg to differ)

She leaned against my leg whilst I filled out the mandatory forms and followed me into the treatment room nosing my hand encouragingly whilst I awaited face down, my much-needed and fantastically medieval-like adjustments. I am a fan. It really works. Doesn’t hurt a bit. Don’t try it at home kids.
Of course Skittles is up for adoption. “Really?” I gush, “I’m looking for a dog,” I lie to myself primarily, “How old is she??!”
I’m all for the ‘coincidental’ adoption, the good luck story, the miraculous putting of a person in the right place at the right time and finding the exactly right dog. Hence my penchant for dangerously last-minute vehicular maneuvers, yanking my car into grass verges and handy pullouts and leaping out onto roads to ‘rescue’ dogs that appear lost and wandering and oh, its just so heartbreaking.
I have a leash on hand for exactly for this kind of emergency. And a collar. And some dog treats. Of course sometimes poor ‘Spot’ or ‘Bruno” has just wandered innocently down the driveway to pee on the Marigolds and have a little look down the road. Not lost at all. Oops. In my defence I have reunited a couple of frantic owners (and some not so frantic) with their lost loved ones. It’s a numbers game. And one I refuse to stop playing.
Skittles is a petite and mellow as they come for a pit lab mix, relinquished by her owner when they moved. What is wrong with people ? Ok OK, mitigating circumstances….. I get it. Don’t judge. After 8 weeks in the shelter Skittles started shutting down. She became deeply depressed, lost hope and stopped eating. That’s when my Chiropractor/ Angel took her in to restore her will to live and hopefully find her ‘person’ for her. That was a couple of months ago and she’s thriving. Did I mention how shiny? And sweet?
What a dog. And the perfect size and though not polite to guess a ‘gal’s’ weight I’d say about 35 pounds give or take. The perfect pocket pitty. Just sayin’………
Why don’t you take her? I hear you cry. Because I have already promised myself to (whispered in many silken ears…shamelessly fickle) Navajo, Monroe, Pedro, Toni, Hurricane, Ottawa, King and also the ones not even up for grabs…Everest, Apache, London, Cologne, Foreman, Sanyo, Allen, Sioux, DNA ( because I called him Diva for weeks and he forgave me) , Brahms, sweet little Hazelnut and of course Batman.
Seriously, Skittles needs a home. If you are interested you can contact the tireless advocates for the well-being of the Canine needy, OSCAR. Oregon Safe Canine Animal Rescue. Check out their Facebook page.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch…….party at Rex’s house.

Sounds like you had a Skittles fetish ! However as you noted, with all those other adoptable dogs at the sled dog ranch, you had to hold yourself back. Difficult I’m sure, however you did the right thing considering the current state of flux in your life. Sure you’ll wind up with a canine pal soon, but when it fits into the scheme of things for you!
Glad you’re getting help with your back. They are rather demanding parts of our bodies, that unfortunately let us know quite obviously when things aren’t quite right.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Enjoy reading your wonderful writings and the gift you have in communicating so effectively via this means. You paint a Rosie picture !!!
